Redoma tinto is Niepoort’s original Douro wine, first released in 1991. It is like Douro: "extreme, with a rigorous character". Old north-facing vineyards from Quinta de Nápoles and Pinhão Valley form the basis of Redoma. Its main varieties are Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca.
Grape Varieties: Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão. Average Vine Age More than 70 years.
Soil: Schist
Tasting Notes: Red berries and cassis lead the nose, layered with floral notes, graphite, liquorice and a subtle herbaceous edge. The palate is structured and serious, with firm, finely drawn tannins, fresh acidity and a savoury character. Focused and restrained, with impressive depth and a long, persistent finish.
Vinification: Forgoing any special sorting process, 100% whole bunches were transferred into stainless steel lagares equipped with mechanised stomping devices, where they macerated for a short period of time. Lastly the wine went through malolactic fermentation in old wooden barrels where it also matured for approximately 22 months.
Ageing: 22 months in old wooden barrels.
Gastronomy: Spicy dishes, pepper steak, red meat, venison. Vegetarian options: spicy dishes featuring mushrooms, for example. Suitable for Vegans & Vegetarians.
Winemaker: Dirk Niepoort
