António Madeira, a Frenchman of Portuguese descent, has his roots in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela. Since 2010, he has been researching sites in this sub-region that our ancestors chose as the best for viticulture—what might be termed the "Grands Crus of the Dão highlands"—and has discovered a number of old vineyards distinguished by the authenticity of their grape varieties, the characteristics and nuances of their granitic soils, and their sun exposure.
Grape Varieties: Tinta Amarela, Jaen, Baga, Tinta Pinheira, and other old grape varieties.
Soil: High-altitude granite.
Vinification: Hand-harvested, with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts in a small vat, employing very gentle extraction. After pressing, the wine is transferred to a 225-liter, used French oak barrel, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and remains for an 18-month aging period. Minimal intervention, with only a small addition of sulfur.
Tasting Notes: An earthy, restrained profile, featuring pure dark fruit, immense elegance, and delicacy. On the palate, it reveals fine acidity, freshness, and precise, focused tannins, underpinned by a persistent energy. It is long, complex, and highly engaging, with a seductive, granular texture. James Suckling specifically highlights the purity of the fruit, the tension, and the depth of this wine.
Awards: 98/100 James Suckling
