António Madeira, a Frenchman of Portuguese descent, has his roots in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela. Since 2010, he has been researching sites in this sub-region that our ancestors chose as the best for viticulture—what might be termed the "Grands Crus of the Dão highlands"—and has discovered a number of old vineyards distinguished by the authenticity of their grape varieties, the characteristics and nuances of their granitic soils, and their sun exposure.
Grape Varieties: A field blend from 130-year-old vines, predominantly consisting of Jaen along with 45 other indigenous grape varieties from the region, such as Baga, Marufo, and Tinta Pinheira, among others.
Soil: High-altitude granite.
Vinification: Hand-harvested, with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts and gentle extraction—prioritizing infusion over forceful handling. The wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation and an extended aging period in used barrels, with no intention of imparting any noticeable oak character.
Tasting Notes: A profound and elegant profile, featuring red and black fruits, floral notes, fresh herbs, and a very distinct mineral expression. On the palate, it displays concentration without heaviness, a fine texture, vibrant acidity, and firm yet polished tannins. The finish is long, fresh, and compelling—possessing the energy and precision that have established António Madeira as one of the most interesting names in the "new" Dão.
