Grape Varieties: 100% Gouveio

Tasting Notes: Quinta de La Rosa White Gouveio 2023 is characterized by its firm acidity. With a bright citrus color, this wine stands out for its freshness, in harmony with citrus aromas and anise notes. It has a long and persistent finish. A harmonious wine.

Winemaking: All grapes used in this wine are from our Cerejinha vineyard. Fermented in stainless steel tanks before aging for 6 months in French oak barrels (100% used wood). Bottled in October 2024.

Terroir: Despite being a very old region, the Douro still has much to explore, thanks to its large size and enormous diversity of terroirs. Quinta de La Rosa is a good example of this diversity, with vineyards of around 100m, next to the river in the imposing Vale do Inferno, and up to 500 meters above sea level in the Lamelas vineyard. We also have different sun exposures to the east, north and south and a great diversity of grape varieties. Always with a privileged view of the Douro River, all of the Quinta's grapes are A-grade – the best the region has to offer. The poor, schist soils, combined with a very varied topography, favor full-bodied wines with excellent levels of minerality, acidity and freshness. This combination of complexity and potential, which is achieved when we have good maturation, and the elegance and freshness so characteristic of our Farm, have made our wines famous. Our wines have an elegant expression of the terroir without exaggeration in maturation, extraction, tannin or wood. La Rosa whites are characterized by floral and citrus notes, with a good balance of fruit.

Harvest: A wet winter replenished water levels. We had a wonderful spring with good flowering and bud formation that produced abundant grapes in the vineyards. Weather patterns are strange all over the world. This was also the case for us in the Douro. After an unusually hot week in May, a relatively cool and wet June followed. Fortunately, we escaped the heatwaves that hit Greece and Italy and with the exception of one very hot week (third week of August), most of the summer was cooler than in 2022. This dry summer was followed by two wet weeks in September, which made harvesting more complicated than usual. As in many other years, Jorge was careful to decide to harvest the grapes when they were ready and this year he felt he had chosen the right vines at the right time. Some of the younger vines were at risk of collapse due to the intense heat and would not have coped well with the rainy season. The older, more mature vines, such as the Vedeal vineyard, held up well. The grapes were in good condition when they arrived at the winery on September 26. Jorge is particularly pleased with the whites and rosés he has produced.
