Sharing moments, ideas, and experiences with other winemakers or wine enthusiasts is something I've always enjoyed and encouraged. That's why I decided to create the Sidecar brand. Every year, I'll challenge a friend to make a wine in my winery in Alentejo. They'll decide how to interpret the region's fantastic vineyards... by riding a motorcycle! For this edition, I invited Ricardo Diogo, producer and winemaker of the prestigious Madeira wines Barbeito.
Grape Varieties: Alicante Bouschet from a 70-year-old vineyard in the Serra de São Mamede.
Wine Tasting: This wine was made with Alicante Bouschet from an old vineyard in the Serra de São Mamede with very low production. We blended two harvests and aged in old barrels brought expressly from Italy. The wine displays all the qualities of the variety, with powerful body and structure, but also with an unusual elegance and velvety finish, a consequence of the prolonged aging in the barrels.
Vinification and Ageing: Blend of 2 harvests, vinified in wine presses and aged in old Italian barrels, the 2018 for 32 months and the 2019 for 20 months.
